Privacy
Short version: no cookies, no accounts, no tracking pixels. Your plan stays on your phone. We keep only anonymous totals.
Who we are
halloweenmap.ie is an independent, community-run guide by Twilight Thursdays, Limerick, Ireland. Contact: hello@halloweenmap.ie.
What stays on your phone
The lanterns you light and the area you picked are saved in your browser's local storage (key hm-2026). They never leave your phone unless you copy your restore link. Clearing your browser data deletes them.
What we count
- Lanterns: when you light or put out a lantern, we add 1 to that event's total for that hour. Nothing about you is stored with it.
- Visits and clicks: daily totals per area of page views, shares, "Near me" taps, clicks to event and ticket pages, clicks to Twilight Thursdays, and whether the visit came from one of our ads or Twilight Thursdays' own links (an
?ad=1or?s=tag, read once and not stored on your phone). Links to event pages carryutm_source=halloweenmap.ie, so organisers can see visits came from us; it identifies the site, not you.
Lantern totals are shown on the map only once five or more people have lit one.
What passes through but is not kept
- Your IP address is used by our host, Cloudflare, to deliver the site, and briefly by us to stop the same device lighting the same lantern repeatedly. We do not store it.
- A rough location derived from your IP address (town level) may be used to suggest an area. It is not stored.
- Near me uses your phone's location on your phone only; we send only the nearest area name (for example, Limerick), never your coordinates.
- Map tiles load from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org). Like any website, it sees your IP address and which part of the map you are looking at, including your own area after you tap "Near me".
Who else is involved
Cloudflare, Inc. hosts the site and its database as our processor; transfers to the US rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. OpenFreeMap serves map tiles directly to your browser. Nobody else receives the totals.
Legal basis and retention
Legitimate interests (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): running an event map and knowing, in aggregate, whether it is useful. Hourly and daily totals are kept until 31 January 2027, then reduced to festival-level totals.
Your rights
We hold nothing that identifies you, so there is usually nothing to access or delete. You can still contact us, and you have the right to complain to the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie).
